High Quality Sound Recording- Record a song UK

If you are a band and wish to record one of your songs then it is important to choose a studio where the engineer has good experience of recording bands. There is a real skill to choosing and knowing which mics are best for which instrument. Placement of overheads, knowing the acoustics of the environment plus how that is all likely to effect your sound, are all important factors.

It would be most preferable to get time in a high end famous UK studio if you can.

Studios like Abbey Road or Air studios in London would be ideal but very expensive! This would guarantee the highest quality of recording therefore giving you something strong to mention in your marketing package. However, if budget is of concern then there are plenty of smaller studios with reasonably good engineers available. Many of these lower budget studios do have good gear to offer therefore being very able to record your song well at low cost.

How to keep the cost of recording a band’s song down.

  • Aim to record a song in one or two takes playing it live while miked up.
  • If recording individual parts separately then make sure every member of the band knows his/her part off by heart.
  • Avoid engaging your engineer in long chats about gear you once owned or who has recorded at the studio or any other pointless, non productive, trivial talk. Stay focused!
  • Make sure every member of the act is focused and ready to do their part and again – minimise the chat.
  • Avoid turning the session into a party. Give the weed, alcohol and white stuff a miss for one day! Take less smoke breaks.
  • If it is an all day session then take a packed lunch ( be careful after all the partying ! ). Avoid leaving the building to eat. (band members wander off, get drunk, get arrested or even killed unexpectedly, thus: ruining the session)
  • Prepare a document that clearly outlines what the band expects from the session in terms of sound, style, mood of the track etc min order to make sure there are no misunderstandings with your engineer on direction. Make sure he fully understands its all about: record a song UK! misunderstandings are time consuming.

If you have a DAW in your home and have already recorded a demo of your track you can cut costs down in a many ways: including…

  • Mix your songs tracks down to stems and take them with you therefore saving a lot of time re-recording parts all over again at cost. Record your stems as 48hz-24 bit wav files at the very least. Higher quality of course works but be aware that hard drive space will be devoured! Record stems to -6 db and leave all effects OFF including compression and limiting so you can take full advantage of the studio hardware!.
  • If you are chasing a better sound with better instruments in the studio of choice then take all the midi files along with you. This will save an enormous amount of time playing parts into the studio DAW.
  • If you have preferred samples such as snares, kick drums, effects etc then arrive with those samples therefore avoiding the lengthy process of auditioning new sounds.
  • Take along a clear session sheet outlining exactly the type of mix/sound/genre you intend creating to avoid any misunderstandings with your engineer.
  • Keep all irrelevant chat to a minimum therefore staying focused on the job at hand.

All of the above can substantially cut the cost of your recording session and maximise productivity. It would be wise in the case of a band situation to agree up front rules for the session so any unscheduled arguing can be averted.

important factor- Agree a rule on artistic decision making.

As a producer I have always used one very simple rule in any writing or recording session. My rule guarantees emotional well being of all participants. The rule is:

Every idea is tried…..

But…..

If one person states they can not live with that idea after hearing it, then it is gone forever.

This way;

1. No one leaves the session resentful that their ideas were not taken seriously

2. No one leaves the session feeling like the production is flawed due to bad ideas.

Basil Simon’s Session Rule.

This rule maintains the excitement in the studio and everyone can live with and fully accept the results.

Record a song UK-Preparing for a recording session properly is key

Know the UK studio environment you are entering into and ask the engineer questions about gear, special requirements or likely issues. You are paying for the time so be sure to use it wisely by preparing well.
